What is Holistic Psychiatry?

At Clarity Integrative Psychiatry, we practice integrative and holistic psychiatry. Integrative psychiatry presents a transformative approach to mental health care by effectively merging conventional psychiatric interventions with various complementary therapies. This comprehensive method emphasizes the importance of treating the whole person—mind, body, and spirit—by acknowledging the complex interplay of biological, psychological, and social factors affecting mental health. Rather than merely addressing symptoms, integrative psychiatry seeks to enhance overall well-being and resilience.

Key components of integrative psychiatry include:

  1. Personalized Medication Management: Your psychiatrist will carefully evaluate your individual situation, prescribing medications tailored to your unique biochemical makeup and psychiatric history and managing them closely to ensure continued efficacy. This personalized approach ensures that your experience is evaluated and valued and that the benefits of medication are maximized while minimizing potential side effects, ultimately creating a more effective treatment plan.

  2. Recommendations for Diverse Therapeutic Modalities: Integrative psychiatry recognizes the efficacy of various therapeutic approaches, ensuring you are engaged in ways that resonate most. In addition to recommending traditional talk therapies like cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), we embrace the practice of innovative modalities such as art therapy, music therapy, and mindfulness-based stress reduction. These diverse methods cater to different learning styles and emotional needs, engaging you in ways that resonate most.

  3. Empowering Lifestyle Modifications: Our holistic approach encourages significant changes in lifestyle habits that can profoundly influence mental health. We promote whole-food nutrition, regular physical activity, adequate sleep, and stress management techniques as foundational elements for emotional and psychological stability. We will provide education and resources to help you implement these changes effectively, empowering you to take control of your mental well-being.

  4. Mind-Body Practices: Integrating practices such as yoga, tai chi, and meditation fosters a sense of mindfulness, improves emotional regulation, and enhances self-awareness. These mind-body techniques help individuals cultivate resilience against stress and anxiety while promoting relaxation and self-discovery.

  5. Nutritional and Supplemental Guidance: We recognize the vital link between nutrition and mental health, and a primary aspect of integrative psychiatry is to explore how dietary choices impact mood and cognition. Your practitioner may recommend specific vitamins, minerals, and herbal supplements that support brain health, assisting you in optimizing your nutritional plans to enhance overall mental well-being.

  6. Strengthening Social Support Networks: Integrative psychiatry significantly emphasizes the role of social and community connections. Through support groups, community activities, and involvement in social networks, individuals can build strong relationships that provide emotional support and foster a sense of belonging—both critical for mental health recovery.

We at Clarity Integrative Psychiatry endeavor to empower individuals on their journey to optimal mental health by adopting this holistic, multifaceted approach. We do everything we can to foster a collaborative environment where patients actively participate in their healing processes, ultimately leading to more sustainable wellness and improved quality of life.

Naveen Thomas

I have been a practicing psychiatrist for nearly 20 years. I graduated from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia and completed my medical school training at Emory University School of Medicine. I then went on to complete my post graduate psychiatric residency training at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

I became interested in the field of holistic/integrative psychiatry after experiencing the ongoing frustrations of the primarily medication-centered approach that I was trained in. Many of my patients were experiencing consistently disappointing results in achieving a state of greater healing and peace, despite significant efforts from all concerned. I began to suspect that the conventional allopathic model of medical and psychiatric care that focuses primarily in symptom reduction had very significant limitations.

I was gradually drawn to the field of integrative psychiatry, which emphasizes a more comprehensive approach that takes into account the profound interconnectedness between mind, body, and spirit and looks to address the root causes of challenging mental health symptoms.

My journey into this field formally began with a Fellowship Program through the University of Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine founded by Dr. Andrew Weill. This program taught me to begin to focusing on optimal nutrition diet, gut health, exercise, and mind/body exercises, to name a just a few.

As I began to start practicing the integrative tools that I learned and helping my patients address the root causes of their symptoms, I was delighted to see that more of my patients were making more meaningful gains in their own healing.

I eventually became certified through the Ketamine Training Center in another very powerful tool called Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy. I have been consistently amazed at the transformations in the lives of my patients that committed to this process.

I look forward to being your partner on your journey to optimal health.
